The Prominent History of Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs was formed in 1959 by Lamar Hunt and was originally located in Dallas and was named the Dallas Texans. In 1963 Hunt was approached by the mayor of Kansas with a proposition to lure Hunt into relocating the Dallas Texans to the Missouri the mayor said to hunt they could triple ticket sales plus extend the capacity using their Municipal Football Stadium, Hunt accepted and moved the team into Kansas City thus renaming the team to The Kansas City Chiefs.

  • Hunt originally planned to keep Texans in the name but was contested by the fans who wanted ‘Chiefs’ in the name in honour of Mayor Bartle who’s nickname was ‘Chief’.

The Kansas City Chiefs soon known as the most dominant players in the widely popular American Football League, this made Lemar Hunt become one of the most central figures in talks with Pete Rozelle the NFL Commissioner which then lead to the AFL and NFL merge which was named none other then the famous,  Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs have to this date played in the Super Bowl only twice, once was in the first ever Super Bowl where they lost to the Green Bay Packers 35 – 10 and the second time in 1970 where they won against the Minnesota Vikings 23 – 7.

In 1966 the Kansas City Chiefs dominated the season with a record of 11 – 2 – 1, this was the year when the Kansas City Chiefs were asked to play in the Super Bowl against the NFL Champions Green Bay Packers in the first ever Super Bowl. The first half of the game was very close, there was nothing in it. However the second half changed for the worse when the Green Bay Packers dominated the half and went on to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 35 – 10.

In 1972, the Kansas City Chiefs new stadium the Arrow Head AKA The Sea Of Red was constructed just outside of Downtown Kansas City. the stadium cost $43 million to build and a further $375 million in renovation costs between 2007 and 2011. The Arrowhead Stadium can hold up to 76,416 fans and was designed by Kivett and Myers. The Kansas City Chiefs won their first game in the new stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals 24 – 14.

In 1988 Lamar Hunt hired a new president Car Peterson who also acted as the general manager and Chiefs executive officer. Carl Peterson went on to fire the head coach Frank Gansz and hired Marty Schottenheimer as the new head coach.

In 1993 with the new president and head coach the Kansas City Chiefs went on to have one of their most successful seasons in 22 years with a record of 101 – 58 – 1. They also had the new signings to thank for the triumph which included  Joe Montana and Marcus Allen.

In recent years the Kansas City Chiefs have been a bit off form, the end of the 2008 season was the worst end to the season in the history of the team ending with a record of 2 – 14. However in 2010 they went on to with their first AFC title since 2003 but were soon let down by a wild car playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens 30 – 7.
